US President Donald Trump “was not surprised” by Russia’s overnight strike on Ukraine’s energy infrastructure, White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt stated, according to The Moscow Times on February 3.

Leavitt said she spoke with Trump on Tuesday morning and that “his reaction, unfortunately, was without surprise,” The Moscow Times reported.

The strike came soon after Trump said he had reached an understanding with the Russian leader, Vladimir Putin, on a week-long pause in attacks on Ukraine’s energy facilities as temperatures fell, the outlet said.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said in an address on January 30 that the proposal for a week of refraining from strikes on energy infrastructure had come from the US side and that Ukraine was ready to mirror such restraint.

"We expect a response from the United States to the Russian strikes. America proposed to stop strikes on energy infrastructure during diplomatic efforts and the cold winter period," Zelenskiy said.

Ukraine’s First Deputy Prime Minister and Energy Minister Denys Shmyhal said on February 3 that Russia targeted power and heating facilities that were operating to supply winter heat, and Ukrainian officials said thousands of apartment buildings in Kyiv and Kharkiv were left without heating.

Ukrainian private energy producer DTEK reported that Russian forces hit its thermal power plants early Tuesday, damaging equipment but causing no casualties.

Earlier, it was reported that Republican Senator Lindsey Graham urged President Trump to supply Ukraine with Tomahawk cruise missiles and increase pressure on Russia following recent large‑scale attacks on Ukrainian cities and infrastructure.
