Zelenskyy Says Russia Broke Promise to US by Hitting Ukraine’s Energy Grid During Freeze

Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said Russia violated a pledge made to the United States to pause strikes on Ukraine’s energy infrastructure during negotiations, accusing Moscow of launching attacks just days after agreeing to hold back, Zelenskyy said, speaking at a joint press briefing with NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte on February 3.
Ukrainian President said Russia ignored a request from the US president to observe a one-week pause in attacks, instead striking during the coldest days of winter.

According to Zelenskyy, the strikes were deliberately aimed at Ukraine’s energy system in order to deprive civilians of electricity and heat amid subzero temperatures.
“They either have four days in a week, or they are fully committed to war,” Zelenskyy said, commenting on what he described as Russia’s broken promise.
The Ukrainian President noted that the overnight barrage marked a record in the number of ballistic missiles used in a single attack. He said Kyiv intends to raise the issue directly with Washington and expects Ukraine’s partners to respond.

Zelenskyy also said that Russia’s latest strikes effectively undermined US-backed de-escalation steps proposed after recent talks in Abu Dhabi.
“Ukraine is ready to support any new US initiatives aimed at de-escalation,” Zelenskyy said. “But we will judge Russia by its actions, not its statements.”
He added that Kyiv is prepared for dialogue following consultations, but stressed that Ukraine would not accept capitulation under the guise of negotiations.
Earlier, Poland’s Foreign Minister Radosław Sikorski publicly condemned Russia’s overnight missile and drone strikes on Kyiv and other regions of Ukraine, saying the attacks expose the emptiness of a recent promise made by Vladimir Putin to US President Donald Trump.
