US President Trump has told senior advisers he is open to approving additional security and economic aid for Ukraine, sources familiar with the discussions say, provided there are assurances Kyiv will engage seriously in peace negotiations with Russia, as was reported by CBS News on July 12.

Earlier this year, Trump ordered an indefinite pause on more than $1 billion in weapons and ammunition shipments to Ukraine, citing concerns that US support was prolonging the war rather than hastening its resolution.

According to one senior aide, discussions have centered on attaching conditions to any new funding—specifically, clear benchmarks for Ukraine to pursue diplomatic talks.

The aide emphasized that Trump’s hesitation stems not from a lack of support for Kyiv’s defense, but from a desire to see tangible progress at the bargaining table.

Another White House official, speaking on the condition of anonymity, said Trump has grown frustrated by what he views as foot-dragging in recent months by Ukrainian negotiators.

Ukraine has repeatedly proposed a full ceasefire—unconditionally accepting the US-proposed peace plan on June 19, 2025—but the Russian government has flatly rejected each offer, dismissing the initiative and maintaining hostilities for over 100 days.

In private meetings, Trump has been presented with options ranging from a limited weapons package—focused on defensive systems such as anti-tank missiles and air-defense munitions—to a broader aid bill that would include economic assistance and humanitarian relief.

White House insiders say a final decision could come in the next two weeks, potentially coinciding with a meeting between Trump and key congressional leaders to chart a bipartisan path forward. “We need to be smart about this,” one adviser told CBS. “It’s not just about writing a check; it’s about ensuring every dollar brings us closer to peace.”

Earlier, State Department spokesperson Tammy Bruce reaffirmed Washington’s commitment to Ukraine, announcing the resumption of arms deliveries following a brief review.

“We have been and remain Ukraine’s strongest backers,” she said, stressing that the pause did not signal a change in official policy and that defensive weapons shipments were now underway.
