After his inauguration, US President-elect Donald Trump directed his aides to arrange a phone call with Russian leader Vladimir Putin. According to a January 20 CNN publication, the conversation could occur in the coming days.
According to sources familiar with the matter, the purpose of the conversation between Trump and Putin will be to explore the possibility of a personal meeting in the coming months to try to end Russia’s war in Ukraine.
The new agency reports that officials on Trump’s national security team have been preparing for a call with Putin for several weeks. However, it remains unclear if a date for the conversation has been set.
Trump’s advisors acknowledge that the war in Ukraine could take months or even longer to resolve. During his campaign leading up to the November 5 election victory, Trump promised to secure a peace deal on his first day in the White House.
On January 8, Keith Kellogg, who was appointed by Trump as special envoy for Ukraine and Russia, announced that Trump plans to resolve the Russian war in Ukraine within the first 100 days of his presidency.
