General John D. Caine, nominated by Trump to lead the US Joint Chiefs of Staff , expressed his support for continued military assistance to Ukraine while emphasizing the need for Europe to take on a greater share of the support. His remarks were made in written responses ahead of a Senate Armed Services Committee hearing, as reported by European Pravda on April 1.

Assessing the battlefield situation, Caine predicted that hostilities in Ukraine would extend into 2025, as Russia believes the war against Ukraine is working in its favor.

“The war in 2025 is likely to remain a war of attrition, with both sides suffering significant personnel and material losses,” Caine noted.

Regarding military aid, Caine underscored Ukraine’s right to self-defense and stated that US assistance plays a crucial role in strengthening Ukraine’s position at the negotiating table while deterring further Russian aggression.

“The United States is just one part of a broader network of nations supporting Ukraine’s defense. We must focus on the unique capabilities that only the US can provide, while Europe increases its share of support,” Caine stated.

Caine is a former F-16 fighter pilot with service in Iraq under special operations forces. He has also held the position of deputy director of the CIA for military affairs.

Earlier it was reported that Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy announced plans for an upcoming first meeting involving countries willing to consider deploying a peacekeeping contingent to Ukraine.
