Trump: Security Guarantees for Ukraine Should Be Europe’s Responsibility

Speaking at the start of a cabinet meeting on February 26, U.S. President Donald Trump stated that the United States would not provide Ukraine with “too many” security guarantees, emphasizing that this should primarily be Europe’s responsibility.
“Let Europe do it. It’s in their interest, it’s their neighbor. But we will make efforts to ensure that everything goes as it should. We will remain Ukraine’s partner—we need rare earth metals, and they have plenty,” Trump said.
He also noted that the U.S. expects to recover the $350 billion provided to Ukraine after a settlement is reached and aims to secure additional financial benefits in the future.
Additionally, Trump expressed support for the initiatives of France and the United Kingdom regarding the deployment of peacekeepers in Ukraine following the end of the war.
Earlier, U.S. President Donald Trump confirmed that Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy will visit Washington on February 28 to sign an agreement on natural resource development in Ukraine. Trump described the deal as significant but did not provide further details. The Ukrainian government has not yet commented on the visit or the agreement.
