US President Donald Trump has called on the European Union to impose tariffs of up to 100 percent on India and China, aiming to increase pressure on Russia to end its war in Ukraine, Financial Times reported on September 10, citing officials familiar with the discussions.

The request came during a meeting in Washington between senior US and EU officials on ways to raise the economic costs of Moscow’s war.

US officials said Washington could match any EU tariffs on India and China, potentially increasing levies on imports from both countries, Financial Times writes.

The push follows growing ties between Putin, Chinese President Xi Jinping, and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi at a recent summit.

Trump’s made this demand amid frustration in the White House over stalled peace talks between and Russia’s intensifying airstrikes on Ukraine. He indicated plans to speak with Russian leader Vladimir Putin “this week or early next week.”

The US has previously raised tariffs on Indian imports to 50 percent over Russian oil purchase.

European capitals were discussing potential secondary sanctions against countries such as China and India for buying Russian oil and gas, they remain cautious about secondary sanctions on China and India due to trade concerns, Financial Times states.

US officials stressed that any punitive measures against Russian energy buyers would need EU support.

“It’s a question of whether the Europeans have the political will to bring the war to an end,” one official said, noting that the burden would be shared among allies.

Previously, China was setting up a system to import regular shipments of liquefied natural gas (LNG) from Russia’s Arctic LNG 2 project, which is sanctioned by the US, potentially testing Washington’s willingness to penalize Beijing, according to an investigation by Bloomberg.
