Trump Vows Patriot Missiles for Ukraine: Putin “Talks So Beautifully, Then Bombs People at Night”

President of the United States Donald Trump said he plans to send Patriot air defense missiles to Ukraine, citing continued Russian strikes and his frustration with Russian leader Vladimir Putin’s refusal to pursue peace, Reuters reported on July 14.
Speaking to reporters at Joint Base Andrews outside Washington, Trump made it clear that while the US will supply advanced air defense systems, European allies will foot the bill.
“I am very disappointed with Putin,” Trump said. “I thought he was somebody that meant what he said. And he’ll talk so beautifully and then he’ll bomb people at night. We don’t like that.”
The exact number of Patriot systems has not been disclosed, but Trump emphasized the deal will be fully reimbursed: “We basically are going to send them various pieces of very sophisticated military equipment. They are going to pay us 100% for that, and that’s the way we want it.”

Trump, who is expected to meet with NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte later this week, has grown increasingly critical of Putin over what he views as dishonesty and escalation.
The comments come ahead of a widely anticipated announcement in which Trump is expected to reveal a new Ukraine weapons plan that may include offensive capabilities—a significant departure from his earlier position that US support should be limited to defensive systems.
Axios reported that the upcoming initiative could involve long-range missiles, with European countries covering the full cost of US-made arms shipped to Ukraine.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has repeatedly urged the West to bolster Ukraine’s air defenses, particularly with Patriot systems, to counter daily Russian missile and drone strikes.

Trump’s tone on Russia has hardened in recent weeks, especially after a July 3 phone call with Putin in which the Russian leader reportedly made clear his intention to ramp up offensive operations in Ukraine.
The new arms package appears to be part of Trump’s evolving strategy, shaped by rising battlefield tensions and growing European pressure to step up support.
Earlier, Trump’s administration had reportedly resumed deliveries of critical military aid to Ukraine, including precision-guided HIMARS rockets and 155mm artillery shells.
