UK and Norway Thwart Russian Submarines Mapping Critical Underwater Cables

British and Norwegian naval forces successfully intercepted and stopped three Russian submarines that were attempting to map critical underwater cables and pipelines in the North Atlantic, according to statements from defense officials from both nations reported by the Norwegian outlet VG on April 10.
The joint operation, which lasted for over a month, involved Norwegian P8 maritime surveillance aircraft and a frigate alongside British naval vessels and aircraft. The allied forces tracked the Russian submarines—identifying two of them as specialized “GUGGI” (GUGI) deep-sea vessels designed for operations at extreme ocean depths—and ultimately forced them to abandon their mission and leave the area.

Norwegian Defense Minister Tore O. Sandvik confirmed the successful deterrence, noting that Russia has been actively developing its capacity to map and potentially sabotage critical underwater infrastructure, VG wrote.
He issued a direct warning to Russian leader Vladimir Putin: “We see you and we know what you’re doing. And we’re prepared. Any attempt to threaten our underwater infrastructure will be revealed.”
UK Defense Secretary John Healey confirmed the details of the month-long surveillance operation, emphasizing that the Russian naval activity was timed to exploit the ongoing crisis in the Middle East. Healey noted that Moscow attempted the mapping operation “while many had their attention targeting the Middle East.”
While there is no evidence that any pipelines or cables were physically damaged, British and allied forces are continuing to investigate the area closely, according to VG.

Following the successful deterrence, NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte publicly welcomed the joint British and Norwegian operations against the Russian submarines in the High North, reaffirming the alliance’s commitment to defending Europe’s vital subsea lifelines.
The interception of three Russian submarines by the UK and Norway in the North Atlantic is the latest escalation of a large, silent war NATO is fighting beneath the surface of Europe’s waters. While these specialized vessels were caught attempting to map pipelines and cables at extreme ocean depths, the threat to critical underwater infrastructure extends heavily into other vulnerable maritime zones, particularly the Baltic Sea.
