The United Kingdom has welcomed progress in US-Ukraine talks on a just end to Russia’s war, while stressing that only the Ukrainian people can determine the country’s future.

Speaking at an OSCE  Permanent Council meeting in Vienna, UK Ambassador Neil Holland underlined that any agreement must protect Ukraine’s sovereignty, security, and internationally recognised borders, Ukrinform correspondent reported on November 28.

Holland praised the joint US-Ukraine statement following what he called “highly productive negotiations” in Geneva, noting that Ukraine has consistently demonstrated its commitment to peace, including readiness for a full and unconditional ceasefire.

He contrasted this with Russia’s behaviour, pointing out that Moscow continued launching drone and missile attacks on Ukrainian cities even as talks were under way. “Russia knows its position is absurd,” he said, arguing that the Kremlin is trying to force Ukrainians into submission through bombardment while maintaining maximalist demands, according to Ukrinform.

The ambassador reaffirmed London’s long-term support for Kyiv, including military assistance to defend against Russian attacks and continued economic pressure on Putin to limit funding for the war.

Previously, EU foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas warned that Russian leader Vladimir Putin, unable to meet his goals on the battlefield, will attempt to negotiate his way to victory. Speaking after a video call with EU foreign ministers, Kallas stressed the importance of continuing support for Ukraine and increasing pressure on Russia.
