Britain is preparing to send its troops to Ukraine to help defend the country’s skies and maritime ports, while making clear they will not be deployed near the front line with Russia.

The decision was announced by UK Chief of Defense Staff Admiral Tony Radakin, The Guardian reported on August 19.

Radakin is expected to brief his American counterparts at the Pentagon in the coming days, outlining plans for British forces to protect seaports and assist in organizing Ukraine’s air defense.

One British official emphasized the significance of upcoming talks: “Wednesday is a really important moment. Nothing happens in Washington without the president giving the green light, so Trump giving his support to security guarantees on Monday kickstarted a lot of activity.”

According to The Guardian, Chief of Defense Staff is also set to confirm that Britain will contribute soldiers for logistics and training support.

Previously, discussions had included the possible deployment of up to 30,000 troops to safeguard Ukrainian infrastructure. However, Britain has scaled back its proposed military peacekeeping mission for Ukraine, shifting from an initial plan for a 30,000-strong deployment to a smaller, more targeted operation.

According to Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer, European nations now support a “realistic mission” to be launched after a ceasefire agreement, focused on air policing over western Ukraine, mine clearance in the Black Sea, and training assistance for Ukrainian forces.

Earlier, it was reported that NATO military leaders will hold a video conference on August 20 to discuss strategy and future planning for Ukraine. The meeting follows high-level talks in Alaska between US President Donald Trump and Russian leader Vladimir Putin, as Western allies weigh their implications for the war and Ukraine’s security.
