The US Department of Defense is continuing to offer President Donald Trump a range of options for military assistance to Ukraine, while reevaluating its approach to ensure support aligns with US defense priorities and maintains the readiness of American forces, according to Pentagon spokesperson Sean Parnell on July 2.

Parnell confirmed the shift during a briefing on July 2, stressing that the strategy is being adapted to reflect the administration’s broader goals.

“The Department of Defense continues to provide the President with robust options for military assistance to Ukraine that support his goal of ending this tragic war,” Parnell said.

“At the same time, the Department is rigorously reviewing and adapting its approach to achieve that goal while preserving the readiness of US Armed forces and aligning with the President’s America First defense priorities.”

Parnell added that a “capability review” is underway to align future aid packages with evolving US military needs. However, he declined to offer specifics regarding the quantity, types, or timing of munitions to be delivered to Ukraine.

“We will not provide information regarding specific quantities or types of munitions being supplied to Ukraine, nor timelines associated with those deliveries,” he stated.

“The Secretary of Defense will continue offering recommendations to the President regarding military assistance decisions moving forward.”

Responding to recent concerns that the US might be scaling back support, State Department spokesperson Tammy Bruce clarified that the Biden-era commitments are not being abandoned—only reassessed.

“We have not suspended weapons shipments to Ukraine. This is one adjustment—one situation—that has changed,” Bruce said at a July 2 briefing.

“As you heard from the Secretary of Defense, there are still numerous powerful options and ongoing efforts in support of Ukraine’s weapons situation.”

She emphasized that President Trump remains committed to delivering Patriot missiles to Ukraine, despite broader logistical and strategic reviews.

“The President also reaffirmed his unwavering commitment to Patriot missile transfers,” she said.

Bruce noted that while the US has robust communication channels with Ukrainian counterparts, not every policy update is delivered through formal diplomatic channels immediately. This came in response to reports that Ukrainian officials first learned of reduced aid shipments via the media.

“Some Ukrainians may have heard about this through the news. Our lines of communication with Ukraine have always been strong,” she said.

“I won’t go into who conveyed that news specifically, but the conversation clearly took place—because this project remains a priority for the United States.”

Bruce stressed that while the delivery mechanisms are evolving, the US commitment to Ukraine has not changed.

“Our commitment to Ukraine remains firm,” she said. “But it will be shaped according to America First principles. The President continues to pursue a diplomatic resolution to the war.”

Earlier, reports emerged that the United States has temporarily suspended deliveries of key ammunition and air defense missiles to Ukraine, including Patriot interceptors, GMLRS, Stinger, AIM-7 missiles, and 155mm artillery shells.
