On September 9, Ukraine allocated a land plot in a secure region for the construction of a new facility to produce 155mm artillery shells.

Prime Minister Denys Shmyhal announced the decision after meeting with Rheinmetall CEO Armin Papperger on September 11 during the DSEI international defense exhibition in London.

The plant will supply ammunition for the needs of Ukraine’s Defense Forces.

Alongside the plans for ammunition production, Rheinmetall confirmed that it will deliver Skyranger short-range air defense systems to Ukraine before the end of 2025. The contract, valued at several hundred million dollars, is scheduled to be signed on September 10 at DSEI in London.

Papperger emphasized the urgency of enhancing Ukraine’s defenses against waves of Russian drone attacks. “Each of these systems can cover an area of four by four kilometers to be completely drone-free,” he told ZDF. He added that deliveries would begin this year, shortly after the contract is finalized.

Meanwhile, German defense company Rheinmetall, in partnership with the Bulgarian government, plans to invest over one billion euros to build Europe’s largest gunpowder plant along with a new facility for producing 155mm artillery shells.

Earlier, it was reported that Bulgaria and Germany’s Rheinmetall will launch major joint defense projects, including Europe’s largest gunpowder plant and a new 155mm artillery shell facility.
