Ukraine Becomes the First Country in the World Targeted by an Intercontinental Ballistic Missile
Russia launched an intercontinental ballistic missile in an attack on the Ukrainian city of Dnipro on November 21, making Ukraine the first country in the world against which an ICBM was used in combat.
ICBMs, designed to deliver nuclear warheads over long distances, are a cornerstone of Russia’s nuclear deterrent strategy. These missiles are defined as ballistic missiles with a range exceeding 5,500 kilometers (3,420 miles).
According to sources from the Ukrainian outlet Ukrainska Pravda, the missile in question is identified as the RS-26 Rubezh, a medium-range ballistic missile.
ICBM, launched from the Russian Astrakhan region, reportedly covered a distance of approximately 621 miles (1,000 kilometers) in less than 5 minutes.
Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelenskyy addressed Russia’s reported use of an intercontinental ballistic missile to strike the city of Dnipro.
“Today it was a new Russian missile. All the parameters: speed, altitude — match those of an intercontinental ballistic missile. All expert evaluations are underway. Obviously, Putin is using Ukraine as a testing ground,” Zelenskyy said. “Obviously, Putin is terrified when normal life simply exists next to him. When people simply have dignity. When a country simply wants to be and has the right to be independent.”
The European Union reacted to reports of Russia deploying an ICBM during a recent attack on Ukraine.
“Putin is once again playing a nuclear gamble,” said Peter Stano, spokesperson for the European Commission, calling such behavior a dangerous provocation.
On the same day, the UK Prime Minister’s spokesperson stated that British intelligence services are “urgently” investigating reports regarding Russia launching an ICBM on Ukraine.
