Ukraine Can Intercept Russia’s New Jet-Powered Bombs, Air Force Confirms

Ukraine’s Air Force confirmed that its air defense systems are capable of intercepting Russia’s new jet-powered guided bombs, known as reactive KABs, which have recently been used in limited strikes across Ukrainian regions.
According to Suspilne on October 25, Yurii Ihnat, spokesperson for the Ukrainian Air Force, said that Russian forces have begun using these modified aerial bombs to test Ukraine’s defensive response.
“This is the same bomb launched from a Su-34 aircraft. In terms of flight characteristics, it resembles a cruise missile, so it can be intercepted by air defense systems,” Ihnat explained.

The new KABs—guided aerial bombs equipped with a small jet engine—have been detected over Odesa, Mykolaiv, and Poltava regions. Ihnat confirmed that Ukraine’s Southern Air Command successfully intercepted two of them, while a third fell in an open area without causing damage.
These weapons represent Russia’s latest effort to extend the range of conventional aerial bombs through engine and guidance upgrades. Ukrainian officials noted that Russia employs them sporadically, primarily for testing.
Ihnat emphasized that such munitions “do not pose a particular danger” compared to cruise missiles and that Ukraine continues to strengthen its defensive capabilities in cooperation with international partners.
Earlier, The Economist reported that Ukraine had developed the “Lima” electronic warfare system, which disrupts the satellite navigation of Russian glide bombs. The system reportedly combines jamming and cyber interference, causing UMPK-equipped bombs to lose accuracy and fall up to 15 kilometers short of their targets.
