Ukraine Downs 589 of 629 Russian Missiles and Drones, 15 People Killed in Strikes

Ukraine’s air defenses intercepted or suppressed 589 out of 629 Russian missiles and drones launched overnight between August 27-28, the Ukrainian Air Forces reported on August 28.
Russia launched 598 Shahed attack drones and decoys, two Kinzhal aeroballistic missiles, nine Iskander-M/KN-23 ballistic missiles, and 20 Kh-101 cruise missiles in one of its heaviest barrages in months. The waves of strikes came from multiple directions, including Russia’s Kursk, Bryansk, Voronezh, and Saratov regions, as well as occupied Crimea.

Ukraine’s air defense—operating fighter aircraft, surface-to-air missile units, electronic warfare systems, and mobile fire groups—shot down 563 Shaheds, one Kinzhal, seven Iskander missiles, and 18 Kh-101 cruise missiles.
Despite the high interception rate, impacts and falling debris were recorded at nearly 40 locations.

15 people, including a 2-year-old girl, a 14-year-old boy, and a 17-year-old girl, were killed in the strikes, 48 more were wounded, according to the Head of the Kyiv City Militarny Administration, Tymur Tkachenko.
Earlier, on August 21, Russia unleashed 574 Shahed drones and 40 missiles, including Kinzhal and Iskander ballistic missiles, as well as Kalibr and Kh-101 cruise missiles. The Air Defense Forces intercepted the majority of the targets.
