According to statements published by Commander of Ukraine’s Unmanned Systems Forces Robert “Madyar” Brovdi on April 6, the target of the strike was the Admiral Grigorovich, a Project 11356R multipurpose frigate used by Russia’s Black Sea Fleet.

Brovdi stated that Ukrainian drones successfully hit the vessel despite active air defense fire from the ship. “Air defense missile launches were carried out directly from the frigate during the approach to the target, which did not prevent the strike,” he said. The extent of the damage is currently being assessed by Ukrainian intelligence.

The operation was planned by the Security Service of Ukraine (SBU) and carried out by the 1st Separate Center of Unmanned Systems, with FP-2 strike drones developed by Ukrainian company Fire Point used in the attack.

The Admiral Grigorovich is the lead ship of its class and is designed for anti-submarine and air defense missions, as well as for launching Kalibr cruise missiles. The vessel is equipped with up to eight Kalibr missiles and a Shtil-1 air defense system carrying 24 missiles.

According to Brovdi, Russian forces attempted to intercept the incoming drones using onboard air defense systems during the strike, but this did not prevent the Ukrainian hit.

In the same operation, Ukrainian forces also targeted the Sivash offshore drilling platform. The strike was conducted by the 413th Separate Unmanned Systems Regiment “Raid” in coordination with Ukraine’s Naval Forces and deep-strike units.

The attack followed reports of a large-scale drone strike on Novorossiysk late on April 5, with local sources indicating that port infrastructure, including the Sheskharis oil terminal, may have been affected.

Novorossiysk serves as a key logistics hub for Russia on the Black Sea and hosts elements of the country’s naval fleet, which has been repeatedly targeted by Ukrainian long-range and maritime drone operations since 2022.

Earlier, S.T.A.L.K.E.R. developer Serhii Hryhorovych offered a Rolls-Royce valued at up to $500,000 to anyone who could sink the Russian frigate Admiral Grigorovich, citing personal motivation tied to his surname and the vessel’s role in Russia’s war against Ukraine.
