Ukraine Launches Largest Fortification Effort Since Start of Full-Scale Invasion

Ukraine is continuing a large-scale effort to strengthen its defensive lines, in what officials describe as the most ambitious fortification program since the start of Russia’s full-scale invasion.
According to a recent report by The Wall Street Journal, the construction of new defensive structures has been underway for the past two years. However, the project has faced significant delays due to ongoing shelling, logistical difficulties, and corruption-related investigations.
In response to Russian advances over the last 18 months—particularly through under-fortified sections in the north—Ukrainian forces are now focusing on creating a more robust defense in the east. This includes building a triple-layer system of trenches, bunkers, and barriers to slow or stop further breakthroughs.

The newest trench systems are being dug deeper and include fortified shelters for small units and command posts for drone operators. As Russia increasingly deploys small mobile units on motorcycles and buggies instead of armored vehicles, Ukraine is adapting its defenses accordingly.
In several areas, Ukrainian forces have installed dense networks of low-profile metal obstacles designed to impede enemy movements. These barriers aim to slow down advancing troops and expose them to drone strikes.
Previously, it was reported that Ukrainian forces have made notable progress in the eastern part of Staromayorske, Donetsk region, reclaiming tactically important positions amid intensified Russian offensive actions across the frontline.
