Ukraine Receives 26 Archer Self-Propelled Howitzers From Sweden as Frontline Artillery Use Intensifies

Sweden has officially delivered 26 Archer self-propelled artillery systems to Ukraine, out of the 44 promised, the Swedish Embassy in Ukraine announced on January 8
“Sweden has gifted Ukraine 26 Archer self-propelled howitzers. Ukrainian forces, including the 45th Artillery Brigade, have highly praised the system for its exceptional effectiveness against Russian positions at distances of up to 50 km. However, intensive use of the Archers has led to rapid barrel wear, prompting the delivery of more than in mid-2025,” the Embassy wrote on X.

The delivery of the 10 spare barrels was first announced in July 2025, though the exact number at the time was not specified.
Earlier, in September, Swedish Defense Minister Pål Jonson announced the country’s 20th military aid package to Ukraine, valued at $836 million. As part of this package, 18 additional Archer systems will be procured, along with extra 155mm ammunition, bringing Ukraine’s total Archer inventory to 44 units.
Sweden first decided to provide the Archer systems to Ukraine in January 2023 as part of one of its military aid packages. In November of that year, soldiers from Ukraine’s 45th Artillery Brigade showcased the system in operation.
Ukrainian forces have actively deployed the Archers on the frontlines, particularly for counter-battery operations. The wheeled systems have also been integrated into the 43rd Artillery Brigade.
Each Archer can fully deploy in just 20 seconds. All preparatory processes, from setup to firing, are fully automated and controlled from the cab, allowing rapid and precise operations in combat conditions.
Previously, it was announced that Sweden is prepared to provide Ukraine with Gripen fighter jets and contribute naval assets to clear mines from the Black Sea once a peace agreement with Russia is in place, Swedish Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson said in a public statement on January 6.
