As of August 20, the Armed Forces of Ukraine control more than 1,260 km² of territory and 93 settlements in the Kursk region of the Russian Federation.

This was reported by the Commander-in-Chief of the Ukrainian Armed Forces Oleksandr Syrskyi at the Congress of local and regional authorities.

"In order to create a security zone and stop shelling from the territory of the Russian Federation of civilian objects in the Sumy region, as well as to overtake the enemy, groups of the Defense Forces are conducting an offensive defense in the Kursk direction,” Syrskyi said. “During the period of the offensive on the territory of the Kursk region, the Armed Forces of Ukraine advanced 28 to 35 km deep into enemy’s defense, and captured 1,263 km² of territory and took control of 93 settlements.”

According to Syrskyi, Russia is conducting a maneuverable defense, trying to prevent the further advance of units of the Defense Forces deep into the territory of Russia, building up groups and moving troops from other directions.

"Further actions of our troops in this direction will depend on the development of the operational situation," he added.

Ukraine officially announced carrying out an operation in the Kursk region on August 12.

Yesterday, on August 20, President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelenskyy reported the control of 92 settlements in the Kursk region of the Russian Federation.
