Ukraine Sees Similarities Between Iran's Actions in Hormuz and Russian Tactics

Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha stated that Iran's attempts to block freedom of navigation in the Strait of Hormuz are "painfully familiar" to Ukraine.
He compared these actions to the tactics used by Russia in the Black Sea on his X account on March 20.

The Foreign Minister highlighted the parallels between the two situations. "In 2022, Russia did the same in the Black Sea: it blocked maritime trade, trying to stifle Ukraine's economy and achieve its political and military goals.
Then Ukraine found a solution. We restored freedom of navigation in the Black Sea on our own, without giving in to the ultimatums of the terrorist state," Sybiha said. He noted that this is another area where Ukraine possesses unique experience, knowledge, and a technological advantage that no other country has.
For Ukraine, Iran’s efforts to block freedom of navigation in the Strait of Hormuz ring a bell.

In 2022, Russia did the same in the Black Sea: blocked maritime trade trying to strangle Ukraine’s economy and achieve political and military goals.
Ukraine found a solution back…
Sybiha emphasized that Kyiv supports all international efforts to restore freedom of navigation in the strategically important Strait of Hormuz.
"As a country that has suffered from such terror, we demand compliance with the fundamental principles of the UN Convention on the Law of the Sea. In addition, it is in the immediate interest of Ukraine to stabilize global markets as soon as possible. Our position is clear: terror must be countered with decisive action," the Foreign Minister added.
The situation comes as international pressure mounts. On March 14, US President Donald Trump expressed hope that several countries, including China, France, Japan, South Korea, and the UK, would send their ships to the Strait of Hormuz.

On March 15, the US President stated that the United States is discussing patrolling the Strait of Hormuz with seven countries. He also mentioned that NATO faces a "very bad" future if the allies do not assist the US in ensuring security in the region.
Ukraine possessed unique expertise and technological advantages that could assist in restoring maritime security. Ukraine had become an expert in destroying an enemy fleet without using one of its own, successfully sending about a dozen Russian warships and two submarines to the bottom of the sea.
Some of these strikes were carried out by Magura and Sea Baby naval drones, which had evolved into entire platforms capable of carrying various drones and missiles.
The report noted that these remote-controlled systems could have been deployed by countries bordering the Strait of Hormuz to protect oil tankers from Iran’s "mosquito fleet" and restore stability to global markets.
