Ukraine is moving toward a new model of warfare by integrating infantry with both aerial and ground-based drones.

These drone assault units combine different technologies into a single operational system, according to the Ministry of Defense of Ukraine on April 15.

The ministry stated that "a new model of warfare is being implemented - drone assault units, which combine aerial and ground drones with infantry into a single system." This transition aims to synchronize the capabilities of traditional foot soldiers with the technical advantages of unmanned systems.

According to the Ministry of Defense, this strategy has already proven successful during operations in southern Ukraine. The ministry noted that "since February, a large volume of territories has been liberated precisely thanks to the use of these newest units."

The shift toward these specialized units marks a development in how the Ukrainian military approaches territorial defense and offensive operations during Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine. By merging drone technology directly with infantry movements, the military seeks to increase efficiency on the battlefield.

On April 5, Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of Ukraine Oleksandr Syrskyi stated that Ukrainian forces had liberated 480 square kilometers of land since the start of the counteroffensive in the Oleksandrivka direction in January.

Ukrainian forces successfully took control of a Russian position using only drones and ground-based robotic systems. President Volodymyr Zelenskyy shared that, for the first time in the history of the war, an enemy position was captured exclusively by unmanned platforms without the participation of infantry or any losses on the Ukrainian side.

The operation demonstrated the effectiveness of integrating high technology to replace soldiers in high-danger zones, ultimately saving lives during the mission.
