Ukraine remains steadfast in its position of not engaging in direct negotiations with Russian leader Vladimir Putin. The prohibition, introduced by Ukraine’s National Security and Defense Council (NSDC), continues to be in effect, according to Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha on January 15.

In an interview with European Pravda, Sybiha confirmed that the NSDC decision barring direct talks with Putin remains valid. When asked about Ukraine’s stance in the context of US President-elect Donald Trump’s intentions to “quickly end the war,” Sybiha reiterated, “Yes, this decision is still in force as of today.”

The minister emphasized that Kyiv has not deviated from its principle of refusing personal negotiations with the Russian leader. He further clarified that this position is firm and reflects Ukraine’s broader strategic considerations.

Sybiha also highlighted that Ukraine views NATO membership as the sole effective security guarantee. “The only viable guarantee for Ukraine is NATO membership. Moreover, Ukraine’s membership is a guarantee of NATO's own security. To put it bluntly, full NATO membership for Ukraine is also the most cost-effective option for ensuring European security,” he stated.

The NSDC resolution on avoiding direct talks with Putin was adopted following Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine. It aligns with Ukraine’s commitment to uphold its sovereignty and ensure a unified international response to Russian aggression.

Earlier, Keith Kellogg, nominated as special envoy for Ukraine by US President-elect Donald Trump, stated in an interview with Fox News that both Russia and Ukraine might now be open to peace talks, comparing the situation to a “cage fight” nearing its conclusion. He expressed confidence in Trump’s ability to mediate and mentioned plans for a January visit to Kyiv.
