Ukraine has significantly expanded its drone strike capabilities, reaching up to 1,700 kilometers into Russian territory. This marks a major development in Ukraine’s defense strategy, as its military increasingly relies on unmanned systems to target key infrastructure supporting Russia’s war efforts.

According to General Oleksandr Syrskyi, Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, the country has been at the forefront of integrating drone warfare into its military operations. Speaking at the “Ukraine. Year 2025” forum, Syrskyi highlighted the effectiveness of Ukraine’s unmanned aerial systems in striking critical Russian targets.

“We were the first in the world to establish dedicated unmanned systems forces. Our experience is now being studied even by our adversary. We are striking the enemy at long distances and intensifying attacks on its territory,” he stated.

Strategic impact of Ukraine’s drone operations

Syrskyi detailed the objectives of Ukraine’s drone strikes, which include targeting Russian military bases, ammunition depots, defense industry facilities, oil refineries, and energy infrastructure—critical assets that sustain Russia’s war machine. The use of long-range drones has allowed Ukraine to disrupt Russian supply chains and weaken logistical networks deep inside enemy territory.

“Our deep-strike capabilities have now reached 1,700 kilometers into Russian territory. These operations are designed to undermine Russia’s ability to continue its aggression by targeting strategic assets that directly support its military operations,” Syrskyi explained.

The Ukrainian commander provided further statistics on the scale of these operations. In 2024 alone, Ukraine’s drone forces carried out approximately 130 missions, successfully striking 377 targets inside Russia. These included weapons production facilities, air bases, and critical infrastructure used for military transport and logistics.

Technological advancements and future plans

Ukraine’s advancements in drone warfare have been a crucial factor in its strategy. Syrskyi noted that in 2024, over 1.3 million drones were deployed to the front lines, with an even greater number expected to be in operation in 2025.

“The enemy is experiencing the full impact of our FPV drones. We are also actively working on scaling up fiber-optic FPV technology, which remains a challenge but is essential for maintaining our technological edge,” he explained.

Ukraine has been investing in domestic drone production and technological innovations to enhance the range, precision, and effectiveness of its unmanned systems. Syrskyi emphasized that staying ahead in technological warfare remains a top priority for the Ukrainian military.

“Our goal is to lead in technological warfare, responding to emerging challenges and implementing advanced solutions to maintain battlefield superiority,” he added.
