A Ukrainian drone strike targeted a Lukoil oil depot in the city of Kstovo, Nizhny Novgorod region, causing significant damage and triggering a large fire, Suspilne reported, citing sources in Ukraine’s military intelligence on January 29.
The facility, which plays a role in sustaining Russia’s war effort, was struck around midnight local time.
“As a result of the attack, the oil depot suffered significant damage, and all four drones launched at the enemy facility reached their targets,” a source said.
Footage shared by Russian social media users shows a massive blaze at the site. Reports indicate that fuel storage tanks were damaged in the strike.
Residents of Kstovo reported hearing up to ten explosions from the direction of the refinery.
The governor of the Nizhny Novgorod region, Gleb Nikitin, claimed that the fire was caused by drone debris rather than a direct hit.
“As a result of repelling the drone attack, debris fell on the territory of one of the enterprises in the Kstovo industrial zone. Firefighters are currently extinguishing the blaze. According to preliminary information, there are no casualties,” Nikitin wrote.
Russia’s Defense Ministry also claimed that its air defenses and electronic warfare systems intercepted 104 drones overnight, including four over the Nizhny Novgorod region.
The Lukoil refinery is one of Russia’s largest oil processing facilities, with an annual capacity of 17 million tons. In 2022, it processed 15.7 million tons of crude oil—about 5% of Russia’s total refining capacity—making it the country’s fourth-largest refinery by output.
The refinery is located roughly 800 kilometers from the Ukrainian border.
Ukrainian drones already attacked this facility twice, last summer and spring.
Earlier, the Russian Ryazan Oil Refinery halted operations following Ukrainian drone strikes on January 24 and 26.
