Ukraine’s EW System Beats Back Russia’s Kinzhal Missiles, Playing “Our Father Is Bandera” Through the Static

Ukraine may have found an inventive way to weaken one of Russia’s most advanced weapons—the Kinzhal hypersonic missile—through the use of its homegrown electronic warfare system known as Lima.
Operated by Ukraine’s Night Watch unit, Lima has reportedly disrupted or diverted around a dozen Kinzhal missiles in recent weeks, according to field operators. The Kinzhal, launched from modified MiG-31 interceptors, travels at over five times the speed of sound and carries a 1,000-pound warhead across several hundred miles—making it one of the most difficult weapons for even US-made Patriot systems to intercept.
Lima is said to interfere with the missile’s satellite navigation, forcing it to rely on a less precise inertial guidance system. As a result, some missiles have missed their intended targets by significant distances.
In a symbolic gesture, operators of the system have reportedly replaced disrupted signals with snippets of the Ukrainian wartime song “Our Father Is Bandera.”

Analysts see the Lima system as a major step forward in Ukraine’s electronic warfare capabilities. Former German defense official Nico Lange told The Economist that Ukrainian engineers may have achieved a real “breakthrough,” creating technology capable of jamming both hypersonic missiles and Russia’s guided aerial bombs.
Unlike traditional jammers that overwhelm signals with noise, Lima reportedly uses advanced digital suppression—combining jamming, spoofing, and cyber interference to mislead weapon guidance systems.
If these reports are confirmed, Ukraine’s innovation could mark a significant turning point, showing that electronic ingenuity can blunt even Russia’s most expensive and sophisticated long-range weapons.
Earlier, it was reported that the Security Service of Ukraine (SBU) has gathered evidence implicating the command of Russian armed groups responsible for the missile strike on Lviv during the night of September 3-4, 2024.
