Ukraine’s First Lady Slams Royal Opera House for Hosting Russian Soprano Anna Netrebko

First Lady of Ukraine Olena Zelenska has condemned the performance of Russian soprano Anna Netrebko, known as “Putin’s diva,” at London’s Royal Opera House, speaking out in an interview with The Times on September 25.
Zelenska emphasized that culture is an element of “soft power” that Russia actively exploits to build a favorable image abroad, even while waging war against Ukraine.
“When people see a great performance with a beautiful voice, they think, ‘Wow, maybe the country that brought up such a wonderful singer is not that bad’,” the First Lady said.

She noted that Russia skillfully manipulates international institutions to promote its culture, citing the “legend of Russian ballet, much of which is actually Ukrainian.” Zelenska added, “Cultural expropriation works—and unfortunately, we allow it to continue.”
Asked whether she felt betrayed by the Royal Opera, Zelenska said she felt “sad” instead, pointing out that New York’s Metropolitan Opera severed ties with Netrebko despite financial penalties and is now facing a lawsuit from her.
“They did that out of principle. But we cannot take offence if everyone does not stand hand in hand with us,” Zelenska added.
Earlier, on the opening night of Tosca, dozens of protesters rallied outside London’s Royal Opera House against the performance of Russian soprano Anna Netrebko.
