In January 2026, Ukraine's Defense Forces carried out a series of successful strikes on a complex of hangar-type buildings at the “Kapustin Yar” test range in the Astrakhan region of Russia.

This was reported by the General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine on February 5.

The strikes targeted the site where pre-launch preparations for intercontinental and medium-range ballistic missiles are conducted. Ukrainian-made long-range strike systems, including the FP-5 “Flamingo,” were used in the operation.

According to the General Staff some buildings at the site sustained varying degrees of damage, with one hangar being severely damaged. Additionally, part of the personnel was evacuated from the area following the strikes.

This is the first official announcement regarding the use of the FP-5 “Flamingo” cruise missile, as reported by Defense Express.

This series of successful operations highlights the increasing effectiveness of Ukraine's missile capabilities, hindering Russia's missile development and its ability to prepare for launches.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy recently reported that one of five Flamingo missiles, launched in a recent strike, successfully hit its target inside Russian-controlled territory, while the remaining four were intercepted by Russian air defenses.

During a briefing in December 2025, he highlighted that the Flamingo missile's hit rate has significantly improved.

“There was a recent use: five missiles were launched – one destroyed the target, and four were intercepted by Russian air defense. All of this is getting stronger in practice – month by month,” Zelenskyy explained.

He also noted that Ukraine continues to refine its missile capabilities through repeated combat use and technical upgrades.

Earlier, Ukrainian precise missile strike targeted the Skif-M plant in Belgorod, a facility recognized by defense analysts as vital to Russia's military aircraft production.

Open-source intelligence groups CyberBoroshno and Exilenova+ reported that four domestically produced Flamingo cruise missiles were employed in the operation on September 23, 2025. The plant is known for providing specialized tools critical to the manufacturing of Su-34, Su-35, Su-57, and MiG aircraft.
