Ukrainian defense forces have introduced a new capability in naval warfare by deploying Sea Baby-type maritime drones equipped with fiber-optic–controlled FPV drones.

According to Defense Express on September 27, at least one such system was likely involved in the recent strike on the Russian port of Tuapse.

Video circulated online shows a captured Ukrainian naval drone carrying four containers, each holding an FPV drone connected by a spool of fiber-optic cable.

This is the first known instance of Ukrainian surface drones carrying fiber-optic FPVs, which remain immune to electronic warfare interference.

As Defense Express reported, the use of fiber-optic links allows operators to maintain uninterrupted control of the FPV drones even under Russian electronic warfare.

The outlet noted that the naval platforms are designed to operate as “drone carriers,” capable of launching precision attacks alongside traditional explosive-laden sea drones.

Footage released by Russian channels shows a damaged Ukrainian sea drone, believed to have carried fiber-optic FPVs but incapacitated before completing its mission.

Fiber-optic guidance enhances communication stability and makes FPV drones resistant to jamming. Ukrainian naval drone carriers were first mentioned in December 2024, when the Navy used them to strike Russian-held gas platforms near Crimea.

In March 2025, video appeared showing FPVs launched from maritime platforms destroying Russian air defense systems in Crimea.

The appearance of sea drones carrying fiber-optic FPVs marks an evolution in Ukraine’s use of unmanned systems at sea.

Ukrainian officials emphasized that operations against Russian oil logistics are intended to disrupt revenues financing the war.

Earlier in September, Ukraine tested its upgraded Magura V7.2 naval drone during NATO’s Dynamic Messenger exercises in Portugal.

The modernized drone features enhanced hydrodynamics, jam-resistant navigation, and mid-deck missile launchers. It was equipped with Sidewinder missiles and designed for integration into NATO maritime operations.
