Rosneft’s Ryazan oil refinery was targeted by Ukrainian drones overnight in what Kyiv described as the ninth such strike on the facility this year, according to a statement by Ukraine’s General Staff on December 6.

In a statement, the General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine reported that units of the Defense Forces carried out a strike on the infrastructure of the Ryazan refinery in Russia’s Ryazan region.

The statement confirmed a hit on the target and damage to a low-temperature isomerization unit used in gasoline production, with the extent of the damage still being assessed.

The refinery, which has a design capacity of 17.1 million tons of crude per year and processed 13.1 million tons in 2024, accounting for about 5% of Russia’s total refining capacity, supplies Moscow and the surrounding region and produces gasoline, diesel, jet fuel, and aviation kerosene, including for Russia’s aerospace and armed forces.

Ukrainian monitoring channels and the Astra project, cited by several outlets, reported that the low-temperature isomerization unit Izomalk-2-LIN-800 was put out of service, while another “key” hydroprocessing and catalytic cracking/reforming unit also sustained damage.

Ryazan regional governor Pavel Malkov confirmed in a Telegram post that “one of the industrial enterprises” in the city had been hit by drone debris, saying there were no casualties or serious structural damage and that material losses were being evaluated.

Russian authorities said air defenses intercepted 29 Ukrainian drones over the Ryazan region overnight, while local footage shared by Russian media showed damage and a fire on the roof of a residential building in the city, where residents reported shattered windows and damaged cars.

The latest strike follows earlier drone attacks on the same refinery on October 24 and November 15 that disabled major processing units, and a subsequent fire after a November 20 strike.

The General Staff said Ukrainian forces also conducted a “fire strike” on the Alchevsk Metallurgical Combine in the city of Alchevsk on the temporarily occupied territory of Ukraine’s Luhansk region, describing the facility as a plant that manufactures components, including bodies, for artillery shells under contracts with Russia’s Defense Ministry.

Earlier, it was reported that multiple drones attacked the Russian city of Ryazan, triggering air defenses and a fire near the Ryazan oil refinery, with local footage showing explosions and smoke but no immediate official confirmation from authorities.
