Ukrainian Drones Wipe Out Russia’s Tor-M2DT Arctic Missile System Built for -50°C

Ukrainian military intelligence operatives have conducted precision drone strikes on several Russian air defense assets, including a rare Arctic-configured surface-to-air missile system, according to a February 10 report from Ukraine’s Main Directorate of Intelligence (HUR).

The strikes were carried out by the HUR’s special operations group known as “Prymary.” The unit used high-precision unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) to target and destroy multiple radar systems and one Tor-M2DT missile complex positioned along various sections of the active front.
According to the HUR, at least four key Russian air defense components were hit in late January, including:
The 48Ya6-K1 “Podlet” radar, designed to detect low-flying aerial targets;
The 55Zh6U “Nebo-U”, used for long-range detection of aerodynamic and ballistic threats;
The 1L119 “Nebo-SVU”, part of Russia’s layered radar control system;
And the 9K332 “Tor-M2DT”, a cold-weather air defense system mounted on a DT-30 tracked Arctic transporter.
The destruction of the Tor-M2DT is of particular significance. Originally built for operations in extreme climates, this system is capable of engaging up to 45 targets simultaneously within a range of 32 kilometers and at altitudes up to 10 kilometers.
Russian sources have previously described it as the final defensive layer against drones, aircraft, and cruise missiles near the battlefield.

According to HUR, the system’s arctic adaptation allows it to operate in temperatures as low as -50°C and makes it especially rare on the Ukrainian front, given its intended deployment in northern or remote regions.
The “Tor” family of air defense systems is manufactured by the Izhevsk Electromechanical Plant “Kupol” in Russia. The Arctic-configured Tor-M2DT has previously been deployed in Russia’s northern military districts but had recently been relocated southward, according to Ukrainian military officials, indicating the Kremlin’s growing need to bolster frontline air defenses against increasingly accurate Ukrainian UAV operations.
Earlier, on December 13, Ukraine’s Prymary destroyed two Russian radar stations in occupied Crimea—the 39N6 “Kasta-2E2” and the 96L6 radar, which forms part of the S-400 “Triumf” system—significantly degrading Russian airspace control over the peninsula, according to HUR.
