Units of the National Guard of Ukraine (NGU) successfully intercepted and destroyed two Russian BM-21 “Grad” multiple rocket launchers (MLRS) in the Donetsk region, according to official reports from the Lasar’s Group special operations unit on February 28.

The operation was carried out by crews of a specialized detachment operating within the responsibility zone of the 20th Army Corps. According to the unit’s social media statement, the first target was identified while pilots were engaged in a separate mission, allowing them to quickly redirect strike assets to the system’s movement route.

The second rocket launcher was located in the same vicinity following a systematic analysis of Russian positions. Despite attempts by Russian forces to conceal the hardware under cover, the NGU unit successfully targeted the site.

The strikes were executed using “LAZAR” heavy bomber drones, a class of unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) often referred to colloquially as “Baba Yaga” due to its heavy payload capacity. Video footage released by Lasar’s Group shows the drones delivering munitions directly onto the targets.

According to the unit’s report, one of the Grad systems was actively being used to shell Ukrainian positions at the moment of the strike. Following the initial hit on one of the vehicles, a Russian soldier attempted to extinguish the fire and save the equipment.

“After the first accurate drops, one of the occupiers tried to save the 'Grad, ' which was already burning. But hearing the sound of our 'Baba Yaga, ' he got scared and rushed to flee into the treeline,” Lasar’s Group stated in their official communication.

The unit confirmed that both systems were ultimately eliminated:

“Both rocket systems were completely destroyed, which reduced the enemy’s fire capabilities in this direction.”

The BM-21 “Grad” remains a primary tool for Russian indirect fire, capable of launching 40 rockets in a single volley. However, its reliance on large truck chassis makes it a high-priority target for Ukrainian drone units.

Earlier, Ukraine’s Unmanned Systems Forces destroyed a previously undocumented variant of Russia’s Pantsir-S1 air defense system mounted on a rare Belarusian-made MZKT-7930 chassis. The system was struck near occupied Mariupol, marking the first confirmed operational sighting of this configuration before its destruction in a Ukrainian drone strike.
