Ukrainian Officials Head to US This Week to Negotiate Mineral Deal Linked to Security Guarantees

The Ukrainian government will send a delegation to the United States this week to begin negotiations on a new draft agreement regarding Ukraine’s mineral resources, The Associated Press reported on April 6, citing Ukrainian Economy Minister Yuliia Svyrydenko.
According to the official, the Ukrainian delegation will include representatives from the Ministries of Economy, Foreign Affairs, Justice, and Finance.
Previously, on April 4, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy announced during a press briefing with journalists that a technical negotiating team would travel from Ukraine to the United States to discuss a subsoil resources agreement.
“At the beginning of next week, I will have a major meeting with our team, where they will present all the points of the agreement—either those that fully satisfy us or those that, in our view, reflect fairness in the deal as we see it,” he added.

Despite the turbulence following the Oval Office meeting, Ukrainian officials remained eager to sign the framework agreement, viewing it as a crucial move to strengthen US support in the war against Russia’s full-scale invasion.
At the end of February, Ukrainian Prime Minister Denys Shmyhal stated that Kyiv will not sign a mineral agreement with the United States unless it is linked to security guarantees.
On April 6, Zelenskyy stated in his evening address that Russia refuses an unconditional ceasefire because it wants to keep striking Ukrainian cities and ports from the Black Sea.
