His winning photograph features a 65-year-old woman from Kyiv sitting near her home after a missile destroyed a building across the street.
The image was captured on April 24, 2025, following a large-scale Russian attack on the capital.

The attack on that day resulted in the deaths of at least 12 people and left approximately 90 others injured. Damage was reported across five districts of Kyiv, with the Sviatoshynskyi district sustaining the most significant impact.
This is not the first time Maloletka has been recognized by this organization. In 2023, he received the World Press Photo of the Year award for his work in Mariupol.
For the 2026 competition, the jury reviewed more than 57,000 entries submitted by 3,747 photographers from 141 countries. A total of 42 regional winners were selected.

The global winners and the finalists for the World Press Photo of the Year 2026 will be announced on April 23.
Previously, Ukrainian photojournalist Yefrem Lukatsky was recognized as one of the winners of the February 2026 AP Photo Contest in the News Photography Story category.
The Associated Press editorial team honored Lukatsky for his photo series capturing the Veterans Theatre in Kyiv, which featured army veterans with amputations, severe burns, and vision loss as they prepared for their first performance.
Having served as a correspondent for the Associated Press since 1989, Lukatsky had already documented key political events and global conflicts throughout his long career.
