Ukrainian tennis player Elina Svitolina has re-entered the top 20 of the Women’s Tennis Association (WTA) rankings, marking her return to the elite tier of women’s tennis for the first time in ten months.

According to the latest WTA update published on March 31, Svitolina moved up four positions, now holding the 18th place.

Svitolina’s advancement follows her performance at the WTA 1000 tournament in Miami, where she reached the Round of 16. Her ranking had previously dropped outside the top 20 in May 2024.

Another strong performer for Ukraine in Miami was Marta Kostyuk, who also advanced to the Round of 16 and rose five positions to a career-high 24th place in the rankings.

Among other Ukrainian players, Dayana Yastremska dropped four spots to 46th after a first-round exit in Miami. Angelina Kalinina saw the largest decline, falling 13 places to 68th after being unable to defend last year’s points from reaching the Round of 16.

Yuliia Starodubtseva improved her position to 103rd following successful qualification matches in Miami. Daria Snigur moved up to 136th, while Anastasiia Soboleva dropped ten spots to 207th. Lesia Tsurenko, who has not competed in 2025, fell 29 places to 238th.

Elina Svitolina is one of Ukraine’s most accomplished athletes and the country’s most successful female tennis player. She made history as the first Ukrainian woman to reach a Wimbledon semifinal and to defeat Serena Williams.

Svitolina also became the first Ukrainian to win the WTA Finals and reached a career-high ranking of No. 3 in the world in both 2017 and 2019.

Born in Odesa, Svitolina began gaining international attention at just 12 years old when she entered the top 10 in Europe’s junior rankings.

She later trained at the academy of Belgian tennis star Justine Henin. Known for her discipline and work ethic, Svitolina consistently stayed on court for extended training sessions, laying the groundwork for her professional success.

Over her career, she has earned nearly $20 million in prize money and has signed endorsement deals with major brands including Nike, Wilson, Hublot, and Ulysse Nardin. In 2019, she launched a charitable foundation to support young tennis talents in Ukraine.

Svitolina remains focused on athletic achievement, stating that her primary goal in the coming years is to continue progressing in her professional tennis career.

Earlier in February, Ukraine’s Olympic high jump champion Yaroslava Mahuchikh began her 2025 season with a gold medal at the Udin Jump Development tournament in Italy, continuing her winning streak in season openers.
