Keith Kellogg, Donald Trump’s special envoy for Ukraine, was en route to Poland when Russian drones crossed into the country overnight on September 10, an incident that triggered the first NATO combat engagement since the start of Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine.. CNN reported on the same day, citing sources familiar with the matter, that Kellogg will continue his trip to Ukraine in the coming days.

The timing of Kellogg’s visit underscored Washington’s involvement as NATO allies faced one of the most serious escalations of the conflict to date. “This was the first time that a NATO member has opened fire during Russia’s war in Ukraine,” Reuters reported, citing Polish officials.

The Polish Ministry of Defense confirmed that wreckage from several drones was secured by military engineers in restricted areas. No casualties were reported. Following the incident, Warsaw invoked Article 4 of the NATO charter, calling emergency consultations among allies. NATO officials emphasized that alliance forces remain on heightened alert along the eastern flank.

The Russian Ministry of Defense has denied responsibility, insisting its drones lack the range to reach Poland. However, technical analysis of the debris collected on Polish territory points to long-range modifications, contradicting Moscow’s assertion.

Earlier, it was reported that US special envoy Keith Kellogg planned another visit to Ukraine as part of diplomatic efforts ahead of a Trump-proposed ceasefire deadline.
