US Republican Senator Roger Wicker delivered a forceful speech in the Senate backing Ukraine and sharply criticizing Russia’s leader, urging allies not to trust Vladimir Putin, European Pravda reported on January 16.

Wicker said Putin is “mocking the peace process,” citing Russia’s recent launch of the largest air attack of the war as proof that Moscow is not interested in genuine negotiations.

“In contrast, over the past few weeks the United States, Ukraine, and our European friends have developed a common negotiating position based on several key principles,” he said, according to European Pravda.

The senator called on the US, Europe, and Ukraine to remain united and remember “who we are dealing with in the person of Vladimir Putin.”

He described Putin as “a dictator with decades of bloodshed on his hands,” adding that “Putin does not repent… he always has been and always will be a KGB agent.”

European Pravda wrote that Wicker pointed to polling showing that 70% of Americans do not believe Putin would honor any peace agreement with Ukraine, arguing there is “no reason to smile back” at the Kremlin leader.

He said Ukrainians would continue to resist Russia’s unprovoked aggression because the alternative would be the destruction of their state.

Wicker urged the United States to keep supporting Kyiv and send a clear signal that Putin “cannot simply wait us out,” calling on President Donald Trump to help strengthen Ukraine’s air defenses and long-range strike capabilities.

“This will help show Putin that his military objectives are unattainable,” Wicker said.

Ealier, US Senator Lindsey Graham said President Donald Trump has given the green light to a bipartisan sanctions bill targeting Russia, marking a potential escalation in Washington’s economic pressure campaign.

According to the senator, the legislation has been months in the making and was developed jointly with Senator Richard Blumenthal and a group of bipartisan lawmakers.
