Senior officials in US President Donald Trump’s administration are reportedly discussing the likelihood that the US will be unable to secure a peace deal in Ukraine within the next few months.

This was reported by Reuters on April 1, citing two US officials familiar with the discussions.

According to the source, the senior officials are now formulating new strategies to apply pressure on both Ukraine and Russia.

The news outlet added that at the beginning, Trump and his top advisers aimed to achieve a full ceasefire in the war by April or May. The ultimate goal was to broker a long-term peace agreement in the following months.

For weeks, Trump has allegedly expressed trust in the Russian leader, asserting that he believes Putin is dedicated to peace. However, sources say the White House has grown increasingly cautious about Putin’s intentions in recent days.

During his campaign, Donald Trump pledged to swiftly end the war in Ukraine, claiming he could do it within “24 hours” of taking office—or even before his inauguration.

On April 1, Jacqui Heinrich, Senior White House Correspondent for Fox News, stated that Trump believes Russian leader Vladimir Putin is delaying comprehensive ceasefire negotiations. According to a source familiar with the discussions, Trump is frustrated with what he perceives as Russia’s slow approach to diplomacy.

On March 30, it was reported that Trump expressed frustration and anger over Putin’s recent remarks questioning the credibility of Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy’s leadership. Trump said he was “very angry” and “pissed off,” stating that Putin’s comments were “not going in the right location.”

In March, several rounds of talks between the US, Ukraine, and Russia took place in Saudi Arabia, with the main focus on a potential ceasefire.
