Xi and Putin Vow to Resolve Tariff Disputes in a “Constructive Spirit” During Beijing Talks

Chinese President Xi Jinping met Russian leader Vladimir Putin in Beijing on September 2, where the two sides addressed growing bilateral trade alongside disputes over tariffs, according to China’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
“China and Russia are each other’s most important neighbors and comprehensive strategic partners,” Xi said, emphasizing that ties had “withstood the test of a changing international landscape.”
At the same time, officials acknowledged friction over tariffs on selected goods, with discussions focusing on reducing trade barriers and stabilizing supply chains.
Putin described deepening cooperation with China as “a foreign policy priority” and identified energy, transport, and defense as key areas for collaboration.

He also expressed hope that disagreements on tariffs would be “resolved in a constructive spirit,” noting that both governments sought to expand settlement in national currencies and align projects under the Belt and Road Initiative.
The leaders reaffirmed their intent to coordinate positions in multilateral forums including the Shanghai Cooperation Organization and BRICS.
Both sides underscored that their partnership “is not directed against any third party” while pledging to strengthen dialogue on regional and global security challenges.
Earlier, it was reported that Vladimir Putin arrived in China for a four-day official visit, including participation in a WWII Victory Day parade and a regional Shanghai Cooperation Organisation summit, where he engaged in bilateral meetings with Xi Jinping and other state leaders.
