Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy is set to take part in an international meeting focused on safeguarding the Strait of Hormuz, highlighting Ukraine’s growing role in discussions on global maritime security, according to the president’s office on April 17.

“Today I will participate in a meeting on Hormuz: many leaders are gathering to coordinate efforts to guarantee security in the Strait of Hormuz. The world now clearly understands where this strait is and why it matters,” Zelenskyy said.

The Ukrainian leader drew parallels between current concerns in the Gulf and events in the Black Sea during 2022 and 2023, when Russia attempted to block Ukraine’s maritime routes.

Ukraine ultimately disrupted those efforts and pushed back Russia’s naval presence, reopening critical shipping lanes despite sustained military pressure.

Zelenskyy suggested that Ukraine’s experience could prove valuable to international partners now facing similar risks in one of the world’s most strategically important waterways.

“Now the entire world sees that security at sea is a global value, not just someone’s local issue. Security must be protected together — and we expect strong conclusions from our partners in response to today’s challenges,” he said.

The Strait of Hormuz, a narrow passage connecting the Gulf to global markets, remains one of the most vital energy transit routes in the world, making its security a priority for governments and industries alike.

Earlier, Zelenskyy made the first public acknowledgment of the operations in several Middle Eastern countries during the Iran war. He said that Ukraine has used domestically produced interceptor drones to shoot down Iranian-designed Shahed drones.
