Zelenskyy, Macron, and Starmer Sign Declaration for Deployment of Western Forces to Ukraine After War

Western allies moved to formalize long-term security guarantees for Ukraine on January 6, as Kyiv and its partners laid the groundwork for an international force intended to help secure the country after hostilities end.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, along with French President Emmanuel Macron and UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer, signed a declaration outlining the deployment of Western forces to Ukraine after the end of the war, at a meeting of the so-called “coalition of the willing” on January 6, The Guardian reported.
The declaration commits both France and the UK to establishing a “Multinational Force for Ukraine,” which will act as a security assurance for Ukraine’s post-war recovery. The force will help secure Ukraine’s skies and seas, support the rebuilding of Ukraine’s armed forces, and provide logistical support, including military hubs across the country.

“The signing of the declaration paves the way for the legal framework to be established for French and UK forces to operate on Ukrainian soil, securing Ukraine’s skies and seas and building an armed forces fit for the future,” Kier Starmer’s office said, according to The Guardian.
“In today’s discussions we have also gone into greater detail about the mechanics of the deployment of the force on the ground,” the statement continued.
“Alongside our plans for a coordination cell, post-ceasefire the UK and France will also establish ‘military hubs’ across Ukraine to enable the deployment and build protected facilities for weapons and military equipment to support Ukraine’s defensive needs,” it concluded.

In addition to the force’s deployment, the UK and France will work on long-term security guarantees and ensure continued military and humanitarian aid. Macron reaffirmed France’s commitment to Ukraine’s future prosperity and defense. Starmer emphasized the UK’s determination to maintain pressure on Russia, including through further sanctions on Russian oil exports, according to The Guardian.
“We will be focusing on Ukraine’s future prosperity with the US and speed up work happening. We will continue to prove support to Ukraine for all the challenges at the moment and the civilians who are continually targeted by the Russians,” Macron stated.
Previously, Volodymyr Zelenskyy said the possible deployment of US peacekeeping forces in Ukraine would be a decision for Washington and could be confirmed by US President Donald Trump.
He stressed that any such move would involve American troops and therefore fall solely under US authority.
