On August 24, 2024, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy clarified the objectives of the Ukrainian military operation in Russia’s Kursk region. During a press conference, he explained that the operation was a “preventive strike” aimed at avoiding the encirclement of Ukrainian forces and the potential occupation of Sumy.

Zelenskyy highlighted that the operation is complex but has already achieved several key objectives. These include replenishing the prisoner exchange fund with captured Russian soldiers and disrupting Russian plans in northern Ukraine. He also emphasized that the operation aligns with Ukraine’s broader diplomatic efforts: “We are very open with our partners. We have outlined how we are pursuing a just peace and ending the war diplomatically. We have invited everyone to the Ukrainian peace formula or Summit on Peace for Ukraine.”

He also noted that one of the main goals of the operation is to show the Russian public and the international community that for Russian leader Vladimir Putin, protecting his own population is more important than occupying Ukrainian territories. Zelenskyy added that while not all details of the operation can be disclosed, the ongoing efforts are aligned with the objectives stated.

The Kursk operation began on August 6, with initial reports coming from Russian sources. Official confirmation from Ukraine was provided on August 12. Since then, Ukrainian forces have gained control over significant areas, including nearly 1,000 square kilometers of Kursk region and 93 settlements.

As part of the operation, Ukraine has established a buffer zone for humanitarian aid and civilian evacuation and has set up its first military command in the region.
