Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy confirmed that Ukraine has no intention of sending troops to Greenland for training or deployment, stating that the country remains focused exclusively on resisting Russia’s full-scale invasion. He also reaffirmed Ukraine’s recognition of Denmark’s sovereignty and territorial integrity.

Zelenskyy made the remarks during a press briefing with journalists, addressing questions about political tensions surrounding Greenland and the potential for Ukraine to be drawn into the dispute.

When asked whether he was concerned that US President Donald Trump’s interest in Greenland could divert Washington’s attention from Ukraine, Zelenskyy replied: “I am concerned about any distraction during a full-scale war,” but added that “the issues of Ukraine and Greenland are not interchangeable,” emphasizing that Ukraine faces “a specific aggressor and specific victims.”

Zelenskyy went on to underscore that “Ukraine respects Denmark’s sovereignty and territorial integrity” and stated that the only way to end the war is through “increased pressure on Russia and strengthening Ukraine.” He expressed hope that the United States would “hear Europe” and pursue a diplomatic solution to the Greenland matter. “There are no other tools to end this war,” he added.

His remarks followed a statement by Trump, who urged European leaders to “focus” on Ukraine rather than on Greenland, amid reported disagreements between US and European officials over Arctic military planning.

Zelenskyy did not confirm any participation of Ukrainian forces in Greenland-related training or exercises. His comments suggest Kyiv views the matter as a transatlantic diplomatic issue, not one requiring direct Ukrainian involvement.

As of January 20, Ukraine’s Ministry of Defense has made no public announcements about any planned military activity or cooperation in the Arctic region.

Earlier, European leaders began discussing alternative security arrangements outside NATO, following President Trump’s threats to annex Greenland. The remarks triggered a reassessment of US reliability and accelerated planning for a future where Ukraine could play a central role in Europe’s defense architecture.
