20 Russian Officers Killed Following Precise Ukrainian Missile Attack in Donetsk

Independent researchers report that a Ukrainian missile attack on Russian military command centers in temporarily occupied Donetsk on August 26 killed 20 Russian officers, marking the highest officer death toll in a single strike since the start of Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine.
An investigation by the Russian media outlet Mediazona, conducted alongside the BBC Russian Service, confirmed the identities, ages, and military ranks of all 20 deceased officers.

The casualties occurred during targeted strikes on the command structures of Russia's Central Military District and the 41st Combined Arms Army.
Among the dead were seven colonels, six lieutenant colonels, five majors, one captain, and one senior lieutenant. Reports indicate 18 officers died immediately during the missile impact, while two later succumbed to their injuries.
Denis Pushilin, the head of the Russian occupation administration in the Donetsk region, acknowledged in a Telegram statement that Ukrainian forces launched an attack on targets within Donetsk on August 26. He stated that air-launched British-French Storm Shadow cruise missiles were utilized in the bombardment and claimed eight civilians were injured.

Mediazona noted two prior incidents involving heavy officer casualties within the 41st Combined Arms Army. According to their records, eight officers were killed on August 4, and four others died on September 8, 2025.
Overall data compiled by Mediazona indicates that at least 276,113 Russian soldiers have died in Ukraine since 2022. The outlet gathers its information by systematically monitoring obituaries, social media accounts, and leaked official databases.
On September 8, 2026, Russian authorities and open-source intelligence projects confirmed the death of Colonel Andrei Krestyansky, a senior instructor and inspector at the Inspection of the Training Center for Command Personnel of the Russian Defense Ministry.
While the exact circumstances and date of his death were not officially disclosed, researchers suggested he was likely killed during a Ukrainian missile strike on a Russian command post in occupied Donetsk on August 26.
