Open-source analysis cited by Astra indicates that smoke was observed rising from the area of Kurganmashzavod, one of Russia’s largest armored vehicle manufacturers.

The drone alert was announced at approximately 12:02 p.m. Kyiv time. No official Russian statement has confirmed the cause of the reported explosions or any damage to industrial facilities.

According to Astra, photographs and videos circulating online appear to show smoke coming from the territory of Kurganmashzavod. The exact location of the incident and the extent of any damage could not be independently verified.

Kurganmashzavod is a key enterprise in Russia’s defense industry. The plant manufactures BMP-2 and BMP-3 infantry fighting vehicles, as well as upgraded variants used by the Russian military. In addition to military production, the company also produces a range of civilian equipment, including tracked utility vehicles and forestry machinery.

Kurgan is located more than 2,000 kilometers from Ukraine’s internationally recognized border, making it one of the most distant Russian industrial centers to report a drone threat since the start of Russia’s full-scale invasion.

The region is also home to several major industrial enterprises, including the Kurgan Bus Plant, Khimmash engineering works, manufacturers of firefighting equipment and steel bridge structures, and the Sintez pharmaceutical company, one of Russia’s largest antibiotic producers.

Ukraine struck two strategic targets inside Russia on July 1, hitting the Ufa oil refinery more than 1,300 kilometers from the front line and a defense industry facility in the Penza region involved in producing missile components, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said.
