German defense company Rheinmetall has secured a contract from Ukraine for artillery shells and propellant charges, the manufacturer announced on June 30.

The order, disclosed by the Düsseldorf-based firm and reported by Reuters, is valued in “the high double-digit millions of dollars.”

Rheinmetall will recognize the contract value in the second quarter of 2026, with the order due for completion in the first quarter of 2027. The company confirmed it has already begun production for the order in Spain.

The firm ranks among Europe's largest defense contractors and one of the world's leading manufacturers of large-caliber ammunition, producing artillery rounds, propellant charges, armored vehicles, and air defense systems.

Rheinmetall has scaled rapidly amid Russia's full-scale war against Ukraine, opening a new artillery plant in Unterlüss, Germany, in August 2025 as part of that expansion.

The company has been responding to rising NATO defense budgets by entering new defense domains and expanding its production capacity, positioning itself as a central supplier for governments rearming across the continent.

As one of the largest manufacturers of large-caliber ammunition, Rheinmetall has been expanding capacity and moving into new defense domains in response to rising NATO budgets.

The order adds to a widening industrial relationship between the German firm and Kyiv. Rheinmetall has partnered with the European defense company Destinus to develop the RUTA Block 3, a long-range strike missile intended to reach targets up to 2,000 kilometers away, with Ukraine serving as its testing ground and flight trials expected in 2027.
