The Kremlin has stated that a new round of trilateral negotiations to end Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine will not occur until Ukrainian forces withdraw from the Donbas region.

Moscow currently views further diplomatic discussions as unproductive under the existing circumstances, according to Unian on May 7.

"Everyone understands, including, I would say, the Ukrainian negotiators, that now Kyiv needs to take only one serious step, after which, firstly, military actions will be suspended, and, secondly, prospects for a serious discussion of the prospects for further long-term settlement will open," said Yuri Ushakov, an aide to the Russian leader.

Ushakov further noted that until there is an agreement to withdraw troops, "convincing each other is largely a waste of time."

The statement emphasizes Russia's position that specific territorial conditions must be met before any formal dialogue regarding a lasting resolution can resume.

Recent statements from Moscow suggest that Russia sees no point in diplomatic engagement until Ukraine meets its territorial demands. However, these claims of seeking a "long-term settlement" are being directly contradicted by intensified military aggression on the ground.

While Kremlin officials dismiss negotiations as unproductive, Russian forces continue to target Ukrainian civilian infrastructure.

On May 6, 2026, Russia launched a new wave of drone and missile strikes across Ukraine, despite a "silence regime" that had officially begun at midnight.

According to the Ukrainian Air Force, Russian forces attacked several regions, including Zaporizhzhia, Kharkiv, and Dnipropetrovsk, using over 100 drones and three missiles.

In Kharkiv, a drone struck a private home and injured two people, while another strike in the Sumy region hit a civilian vehicle, killing one woman. Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha stated that these actions demonstrated Moscow's rejection of genuine diplomatic efforts and peace initiatives.
