Kyiv Faces Internet Disruptions as Russian Strikes Hit Data Centers and Communications Infrastructure

Around 100,000 households across Kyiv and the surrounding region are experiencing internet connectivity issues following a Russian attack.

Ukraine’s Ministry of Digital Transformation confirmed this on September 23.

Emergency response teams and specialists are currently assessing the extent of the damage across the local network.

Crews are actively working on repairs to restore regular service and bring stable connectivity back to the impacted areas as quickly as possible.

The Ministry of Digital Transformation has not provided a specific timeline for when full service will be restored to the capital and the neighboring region amid ongoing recovery efforts following Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine.

At least three internet service providers in Kyiv—Pavutyna, UTELS, and Crazy Network—reported service disruptions following a attack by Russian forces. Data centers belonging to Pavutyna and UTELS sustained damage, causing network interruptions.

The attack on a traffic exchange point in Kyiv also led to internet connectivity issues for Crazy Network users in Vinnytsia and the Khmelnytskyi region.

The Russian Ministry of Defense has officially claimed to be deliberately targeting internet communication infrastructure in Ukraine, stating that recent strikes against Kyiv-based internet service providers were aimed at "striking facilities supporting the Armed Forces of Ukraine," according to Ukrainian political analyst, Andrii Smolii.

The latest strikes followed another daytime Russian attack on Kyiv on September 22, when Russian forces deployed jet-powered Shahed drones.

One of the drones directly struck fuel storage tanks in the capital’s northern Obolonskyi district, according to Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko.

That attack injured eight people across the city. Three were hospitalized, while five others received medical assistance at the scene or were treated on an outpatient basis.
