Russia Pounds Ukraine With Zircon and Ballistic Missiles, 120 Drones—6 Killed in Zaporizhzhia

Russia launched a large-scale combined missile and drone attack against Ukraine overnight on August 11, using Zircon anti-ship missiles, Iskander-M and North Korean KN-23 ballistic missiles, as well as 120 drones of several types, according to Ukraine’s Air Force on August 11.

Russian missiles were launched from the Kursk, Rostov, Voronezh, and Oryol regions. Ukraine’s Air Force has not yet disclosed the total number of missiles used in the attack.

The drones approached from multiple directions, including Kursk, Millerovo, Oryol, and Primorsko-Akhtarsk in Russia, as well as temporarily occupied Donetsk and Hvardiiske in temporarily occupied Crimea.

“The enemy attacked Ukraine with 120 Shahed-type strike UAVs—most of them jet-powered—as well as Gerbera drones and Parodiya decoy drones,” Ukraine’s Air Force said.

Ukrainian aviation, air defense missile units, electronic warfare and unmanned systems units, and mobile fire teams were involved in repelling the attack.

The main targets were the Kyiv region and Zaporizhzhia, according to the Air Force.

“According to preliminary data, as of 9:00 am., air defenses shot down or suppressed 98 enemy UAVs of the Shahed, Gerbera and other types in the north, south and east of the country,” the Air Force said.

Russian missiles and 22 drones penetrated Ukrainian defenses, with impacts recorded at 21 locations. Debris from intercepted targets fell at another five sites.

Children’s hospital grounds hit in Kyiv

Russia’s ballistic attack also struck the grounds of a children’s hospital in Kyiv’s Shevchenkivskyi district, Ukraine’s State Emergency Service reported.

Emergency officials released footage showing two craters on the hospital grounds and shattered windows in the building.

A gas pipe was also damaged, causing a leak that was subsequently stopped by emergency crews.

Children and medical personnel were inside a shelter at the time of the strike, preventing casualties at the hospital.

Elsewhere in Kyiv, another strike hit a warehouse and triggered a major fire covering approximately 1,200 square meters, or nearly 13,000 square feet.

Firefighters extinguished the blaze. One person was injured and handed over to medical personnel.

Emergency crews continued working at both locations as authorities assessed the full extent of the damage.

Warehouses and trucks damaged in Kyiv region

The Kyiv Regional Military Administration said Russia also attacked the region with ballistic missiles and strike drones overnight.

“Tonight, the enemy once again attacked the Kyiv region with ballistic missiles and strike drones,” the administration said.

No deaths or injuries were reported in the region.

In the Bucha district, the attack damaged warehouse facilities and three trucks. Emergency services were working at the affected sites to document damage and clear the aftermath.

At least 6 killed in Zaporizhzhia

The most severe casualties were reported in Zaporizhzhia, where Russia carried out a combined attack using missiles and aerial bombs.

At least six people were killed and 19 wounded, according to Zaporizhzhia Regional Military Administration head Ivan Fedorov.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy described the attack as “a vicious attack, calculated to inflict maximum damage specifically on civilian infrastructure.”

The attack began with warnings that high-speed missiles were approaching the city. Soon afterward, authorities reported damage to residential and non-residential buildings, fires, and power outages.

The casualty toll climbed repeatedly through the night. Initial reports listed two wounded, before the number rose to nine and eventually to at least 20.

Fedorov said Russian forces struck industrial and infrastructure facilities, damaging a garage complex and several non-residential buildings.

As of the latest update, at least five people had been killed and 20 injured, with authorities warning that the number of casualties could still rise.

Medical teams and rescue crews remain at the impact sites.

“Every step Russia takes – increasing ballistic missile production, bringing in North Korean equipment, preparing for mobilization – all of this shows that Moscow is preparing not for peace, but for escalation,” Zelenskyy concluded.

Earlier, Russian airstrikes struck critical infrastructure in Kherson, cutting electricity and water supplies across the southern Ukrainian city.

The strikes left the Central, Dnipro, and Korabel districts partially de-energized, the administration reported. Specialists were assessing the scale of the destruction and the emergency repairs required to restore service.
