Russia’s Air Surveillance Takes a Hit as Ukraine Strikes $100 Million Nebo-U Radar

Ukrainian forces struck a Russian Nebo-U long-range radar station in Krasnodar Krai overnight, according to the General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine on October 16.
The strike targeted a 55Zh6U Nebo-U radar near the settlement of Magri in Russia’s Krasnodar Region during the night of October 16. A fire broke out near the facility following the attack.

The Nebo-U is a three-dimensional VHF-band radar designed to detect and track aircraft, cruise missiles, and ballistic missiles. The General Staff estimated the system’s value at approximately $100 million.
“Strikes on such systems reduce the enemy’s ability to control airspace and promptly detect aerial targets,” the General Staff stated.
Ukraine’s military did not disclose the weapons used in the strike or provide an assessment of the radar’s condition after the attack. It noted that operations against key Russian military facilities are continuing.
The strike follows earlier Ukrainian attacks on the same type of radar as part of an effort to blind Russia's air surveillance network.

On August 27, Ukrainian drones hit a Nebo-U station at the Millerovo military airfield in Russia's Rostov region, roughly 170 kilometers, or 105 miles, from the front line.
The airfield serves as a launch point for Shahed-type attack drones and other strike and decoy UAVs used against Ukraine's eastern, central, and northern regions. That attack formed part of a broader campaign to establish sustained fire control over the site.
